John & Susanna Deary, nee Ollett, of Martham

John Deary and his wife Susanna, nee Ollett are buried in plot 15 at the Baptist graveyard at Oak Tree Close. John was born at Martham in about 1826 to John Deary (Snr) and Margaret Alexander. He was baptised at St Mary’s on 16th October 1826. He married Susanna, nee Ollett in Great Yarmouth in 1856. She was born in 1813 at Martham. During his lifetime John was at various times a thatcher, a farmer and a coal agent. He died on 30th December 1892 and Susanna died on 9th January 1898.

John grew up at his parents home at what is now 70 White Street – shown on the right. His father died in 1841 and mother in 1854 and John & Susanna inherited the cottage and were living there at the time of the 1861 census. At that time John was a thatcher. They were still there in 1871 but John had become a farmer of ten acres which was probably land inherited from his parents. John would not have been able to make a living from just ten acres and by 1881 he had moved with Susanna to Staithe Road and was again a thatcher.

One of John’s siblings was a sister called Hannah who is also buried at the Baptist Church in plot 17.
