Robert William Durrant of Martham

Robert is listed on the War Memorial as one of those who gave his life during the Second World War.

Robert was born on 29th March 1915 in Martham. He was the only son of Robert Durrant & Alice Elizabeth, nee Powles. He was baptized on 2nd April 1915 at St Mary’s. He had a sister called Winifred Alice who is shown below in a photograph next to the War Memorial. They lived at the same address at Crane’s Green, Martham in 1931 according to the Electoral Register for that year.

Robert was in the Royal Navy as an Able Seaman (C/SSX 17507) serving on H.M.S. London in 1941. He must have been injured or wounded in some way because he died of an unknown cause on 19th December 1941 in North Shields Hospital, aged 26. He was buried on 27th December 1941 in St Mary’s graveyard at section H, plot M40.
