Thomas Smith (1830-1860) of Martham
Plus his wife Eliza, nee Jeary.

Thomas is buried in plot 4 of the Baptist graveyard at Oak Tree Close. His history illustrates just how delicately the balance of life was in the mid-19th century. He died on 6th September 1860 when he was only 30. By then however his family life had already seen many ups and downs. He was a tailor and married Eliza Jeary at St Mary’s on 15th October 1854 and they quickly had four children but tragically three died within months of being born. They were Frederick in the summer of 1855; Catherine in the spring of 1858 and Alfred who was in born late in 1859 and died in early 1860. In between them was another son they also called Frederick who was born in 1856 and survived into adulthood. The three infants are commemorated on the grave of their father.

Eliza was part of the well known large family of Jeary’s the butchers of The Green and White Street. Her parents were John Jeary and Mary Ann, nee Crowder.
