Humphrey & Jane Gymer, nee Ward, of Martham

Humphrey Gymer was born in 1865 in Martham as the eighth child of John Futter Gymer (1827-1912) & Sarah, nee Dyball (1829-1908). Humphrey came from a large family and had at least 13 siblings. In 1871, when he was seven and at school, he lived with his parents at Damgate. By the time he was 17 he still lived with his parents at Damgate but had become  an agricultural labourer.

In 1886, when he was 21, John married local girl Jane Ward and by 1911 they had three children and were living at Burnham Cottage, Staithe Road.

In all, Humphrey & Jane had five children the first four of whom were born in Martham as follows:

  1. Alice Kate Gymer was born in 1886.
  2. John Gymer was born in 1887.
  3. Charles Gymer was born in 1889.
  4. Elijah George Gymer was born on 4th July 1893.
  5. Blanche Gymer was born in 1896 in Rollesby and died in 1899.

Humphrey’s first wife, Jane, was born on 23rd October 1865 in Martham. Her parents were James Ward & Sarah Hodds. Jane died on 7th December 1934 and is buried at St Mary the Virgin graveyard, section H, plot K19

Humphrey’s second marriage was to Francis Ruth Rowed in Surrey in 1936. In 1939 they were living at ‘Oratava’, Woking, Surrey by which time he was a retired market gardener. Francis was born on 24th May 1871 and died in Surrey on 16th January 1953 just two days before Humphrey who died on 18th in Surrey and is buried with his first wife at St Mary the Virgin graveyard section H, plot K19.
