1842 Martham Tithe Award

Village centre – 1842 Tithe Award Map

The 1842 Martham Tithe Award was drawn because the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836 required that payments of tithes in the form of farm produce should be replaced by money payments. Tithe was a tax, which was paid to the local church. Tithe maps generally show the boundaries of woods, fields, roads, waterways and buildings.

Originally, tithes were payments in kind (crops, wool, milk etc.) comprising of an agreed proportion of the yearly profits from farming and made by parishioners for the support of their parish church and its clergy. In theory, tithes were payable on (i) all things arising from the ground and subject to annual increases – grain, wood, vegetables etc.; (ii) all things nourished by the ground – the young of cattle, sheep etc., and animal produce such as milk, eggs and wool; and (iii) the produce of man’s labour, particularly the profits from mills and fishing.

The map that accompanies the Award shows plots, mostly numbered, and these link with the Award’s list of owners and/or occupiers. The original Award map is held at the Norfolk Records Office and is about eight feet square on parchment. I have photographed it as best I can, in sections, and it can be viewed in the gallery below but I admit some images are poor. Buildings are coloured in pink, those outlined, but not coloured, are barns or outhouses.
The core of the Award is a list, in alphabetical order, of landowners, occupiers, plot numbers, property descriptions, plots sizes and tithe amount payable. Landowners include bodies like the Commissioners of Drainage and charities like the Trustee for the Poor but are mainly made up of individuals. These invaluable lists are shown in a gallery of photographs below.
There are 723 plots listed in the Award so to find who owned what I have provided a ‘table’ in plot number order. If you find a plot on a map you are interested in you can use this table to find out who owned it. It is a long list and will need scrolling down page by page.
