Rev. Thomas Corbould (1796-1869). Curate of St Mary the Virgin, Martham

Rev. Corbould was born on 11th May 1796 in Norwich to John Corbould & Elizabeth, nee Warren and was baptised when three days old at St Gregory’s Church, Bracon Ash, Norwich.

He was educated at Norwich Grammar School and Benet College, Cambridge where he obtained his B.A.

He was ordained as a deacon at Norwich Cathedral on 28th June 1819 and as a priest on 15th October 1820.

When he was 30, he married Hannah Francis the daughter of John Francis & Elizabeth, nee Cubitt on 11th December 1826 at St Mary the Virgin, Martham. They had two daughters, both born at Upton, Norfolk; Elizabeth who was born on 26th December 1827 and Anne who was born on  20th December 1828 but only lived until she was eight.

Thomas was the curate to Reverend George Pearse between 10th September 1836 and 1850 at St Mary the Virgin, Martham. During this period he was listed in White’s, the Post Office and Hunts Directories of 1845, 1846 & 1850 as the curate at St Mary’s. Having left Martham he later became the Rector of Tacolneston from 28th October 1858 until his death in 1869.

Thomas died on 28th January 1869 at Bracon Ash, Norwich age 72 and was buried at St Nicholas churchyard at Bracon Ash where his wife Hannah is also buried having died in 1875. Their daughter Elizabeth died in 1905 and is also buried there. Their daughter Anne was buried at St Mary’s, Martham but is commemorated on their grave.

The inscription on their grave reads: “Pitched roof” tomb; inscription on top slopes; grey granite; within fenced area.
South side: Sacred to the memory of the Rev Thomas Corbould B.A. Rector of Tacolneston who departed this life Jan 28th, 1869 in the 73rd year of his age. And, also of Hannah Corbould his wife who departed this life Nov 23rd, 1875 in the 83rd year of her age.
North side: Sacred to the memory of Anne Corbould daughter of the Rev Thomas Corbould and Hannah his wife who departed this life Dec. 2nd, 1836 in the 8th year of her age and was buried in Martham Church.
And, of Elizabeth / eldest daughter of the Rev / Thomas Corbould B.A. and Hannah his wife who departed this life Nov 18th, 1905 in the 78th year of her age.
