June 2026 – The page about Chapman\u2019s Butchers <\/a><\/em>was completely re-written after the house deeds became available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 2026 – A rare 1st century terret ring was found in the village this month and added to the museum collection that you can see HERE.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 2026 – A new page was added about the life and times of Reverend Charles Boutell (1771-1855).<\/a><\/em>
More details were added to the page about Henry Wilkinson Jnr. (1893-1915) <\/a><\/em>about the days leading up to his death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

March 2026 – Two new pages were added about people:-
William Bushell (1768-1823)<\/a> <\/em>and John Carrier (1748-1826).<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

February 2026 – Inspired by the page about Flegg Island <\/a><\/em>on this site Hugh Turner undertook his own exploration of the Island and wrote about his adventures. I am grateful to him for sharing his informative story that you can read by clicking HERE.  <\/a> <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

October 2025 – New pages were added that feature the history of the first five years of Martham Parish Council (1894-1899).<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 2025 – A tribute to Walter Harriss<\/a><\/em>, wheelwright, Parish Clerk, and community stalwart, was added to the website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 2025 – An unusual memory of Henry Futter was added to his page that you can find under ‘People’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

July 2025 – There was a time, long ago, that the altar at St Mary\u2019s was adorned with a magnificent medieval cloth. What happened to it? Find out HERE.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

June 2025 <\/strong>– A fascinating account of what St Mary the Virgin was like before its restoration in 1856 was added and you can read it here.<\/a><\/em>
A photo of a bronze 15th century figure of the Madonna was added to the miscellaneous gallery of the Museum, that you can see here.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 2025 <\/strong>– I added a page about the Sutfield’s<\/a><\/em> of Martham who were a prominent family in the village from the 16th to 18th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 2025<\/strong> – Three more Roman finds were made recently in the village and have been added to the ‘Museum’ pages. They are a 2nd-century disc brooch<\/em> <\/a>and two coins: one, an Antoninianus of Carausius<\/a><\/em> and the other, a sestertius of the Emper0r Aurelius<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 2024<\/strong> – a page about some of the Greenacre family of Martham<\/a><\/em> who were shoemakers was updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

November 2024 – <\/strong>photos and information about two recent coins finds were added to the Museum collection. One coin was of Allectus<\/a><\/em> who declared himself Emporer of Britain from 293 to 296. The other, very unusual, group was of folded medieval coins<\/a><\/em> used to prey for a medical miracle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

October 2024 <\/strong>– A new page was added about the history of the Steam Mill, Back Lane, Martham.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 2024 <\/strong>– A new page about the Dyball family of farmers and millers<\/a><\/em> was added. A new summary page about Dungeon Corner on the River Thurne<\/a> was added.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

July & August 2024<\/strong> – Technical changes were made to improve site speed and access. Photos compacted. Duplicate photos removed. Redundant backup pages deleted. SSL safe site certificate approved on 7th August 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

June 2024<\/strong> – A page was added showing nine marriage bonds<\/a><\/em> relating to marriages at St Mary’s.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 2024<\/strong> – See a new item that could be Martham’s greatest treasure. The personal seal of William De Martham, c1085.<\/a><\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 2024 <\/strong>– A page was added about Baden & Brian Buck, market gardeners, of Somerton Road, that includes information about the Buck family East End Store. <\/a>
Cementing the village with its Saxon past a stirrup mount of the period AD1000-1100 was found this month and can be seen in the Farming Section of the Museum.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

March 2024 <\/strong>– A page was added that tells you all about the Widows Savings Club (1884-1958).<\/a><\/em>
A range of recent finds were added to the ‘Museum’ as follows:
A 1st century ‘Colchester’ Roman brooch was added to the ‘Jewellery’<\/a> gallery.
A 14th century Jetton of the French King, Charles IV was added to the ‘Foreign Coins’ <\/a><\/em>gallery.
A decorative lead chair ; a sword pommel and a bosun’s whistle were added to the ‘Miscellaneous’<\/a><\/em> gallery.
A horse harness plate was added to the ‘Farming’<\/a><\/em> gallery.
A Carausius AE Ant, was added to the ‘Roman Coins’<\/a><\/em> gallery.
A groat of Henry VI was added to the ‘Medieval Coins’<\/a><\/em> gallery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February 2024 <\/strong>– A new page was added about Mill Barn, Hemsby Road.<\/a><\/em>
A commemorative medal dated 1757 of Frederick II of Prussia<\/a><\/em>, found in Martham, was added to the Museum collection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 2024 <\/strong>– A new page was added about the Old Bakery, 58 Black Street.<\/a><\/em>
Also, the page that features the White House <\/a><\/em>was updated with the memories of Rosemary Kelleher, nee Hall, about being evacuated there during the 2nd World War.
The Page about the Gunton Family<\/em> <\/a>was updated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 2023 <\/strong>– A page was added about the Co-op on The Green.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

November 2023<\/strong> – A major new page was added about Brickmaking at Martham<\/a><\/em>. Plus in support of this two other pages, one about Brickfield Farm<\/a><\/em>, Staithe Road and the other about Robert Moore Snr., (1790-1874) & Robert Moore Jnr., (1825-1885).<\/a><\/em>
Three finds were made in Martham this month and photos of them have been added to the ‘Museum’. They were a lead weight shaped like a shield<\/a><\/em>; a George I sixpence<\/a><\/em> and a Saxon small long brooch that dates from about 600AD<\/a><\/em> and truly supports Martham being a Saxon village. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

October 2023<\/strong> – A new page was added called “A Tribute to Len & Connie Spencer of Martham”.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 2023<\/strong> – Two new pages were added during September. The first is a major new photo album entitled \u2018Shops, Businesses & Trade\u2019. You can see it by clicking HERE<\/a><\/em>. It has 185 photos many of which you may have seen before but I have tried to connect properties, people and work with each other so that as far as possible the variety of properties are connected with the premises people lived in and\/or worked from.
A second addition is the story behind the Debbage Memorial at St Mary the Virgin which you can see HERE<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 2023<\/strong> – A new page was added of those people listed in the 1851 Martham census.<\/a><\/em>
Improved statistics were added to the main Census page<\/a><\/em> for 1841, 1851, 1861, 1881 & 1891.
Three recent Roman coin<\/a><\/em> finds were added to the Museum being a follis of Constantine I; a denarius of Severus Alexander and a siliqua of Flavious Eugenius.
A heraldic pendant was also added to the miscellaneous Gallery <\/a><\/em>of the Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

July 2023<\/strong> – A new page was added providing details of Martham Footpath No25 Damgate to the River Thurne.<\/a><\/em>
A new photograph album was added showing Farming Back in the Day.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

June 2023<\/strong> – A new page was added called The Yards of Martham<\/a><\/em> providing details of basic dwellings that several hundred people lived in from the mid 19th century until around the 1960’s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 2023 <\/strong>– Fanny Elizabeth Jeary<\/em> (1852-1934)<\/a> came from the well-known family butchers of Martham but grew up and married Rev John Smith and had a famous son called Rev. Edwin Smith. All three were missionaries in Africa. Their story was added this month.
Information, statistics and data for the 1841, 1861, 1881 & 1891 census records <\/a><\/em>has been enhanced and corrections made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 2023<\/strong> – New finds were added to the museum collection included a medieval sword pommel which can be seen in the ‘Miscellaneous Gallery’<\/a><\/em>. A lovely medieval seal matrix that is in the ‘Seals Gallery’<\/a><\/em>. A 13th\/14th century key with a lozenge bow end and a 15th\/16th century purse frame were added to the Domestic Gallery.<\/a><\/em> A James II shilling can be seen in the Stuart Gallery.<\/a><\/em> A Saxon violin shaped buckle pin was added to the Jewellery Gallery. <\/a><\/em>You can also see them by going to ‘Home’ and selecting ‘Museum’<\/a><\/em> from the top menu.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

March 2023<\/strong> – During March the history of Church Gate Cottages, 65, 67, 69 & 71 Black Street<\/a><\/em> was added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

February 2023<\/strong> – Two more items we added to the museum collection. One was a token from the Commonwealth period 1649-1660 which can be seen in the Tokens gallery<\/a><\/em> and the other was an Anglo-Saxon Silver sceat that can be seen in the Saxon, Viking & Norman Coins gallery.<\/a><\/em>
New information has come to light about the Hemsby Road post mill<\/a><\/em> so that page has been updated.
Information about the Mustard Hyrn Pond<\/a> <\/em>has been added to the “Ponds” page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

January 2023<\/strong> – During this month I added a new page about the Families of Mustard Hyrn, Cess. <\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

December 2022 <\/strong>– During this month I added a new page about Westgrove, 9 Rollesby Road.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

November 2022<\/strong> – During this month I added a new page about Hope Cottage, 47 The Green<\/a><\/em> and a complimentary page about Oliver Starling (1861-1950).<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

October 2022<\/strong> – During this month I added information about Rectory House, Repps Road and Rectory Cottages, Cess.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

September 2022 <\/strong>– During the last month more finds, made in the village, were added to the virtual Martham Museum as follows:
A coin weight of a half gold ryal \u2013 see the Medieval Coins Gallery.<\/a><\/em>
A Saxon brooch showing a wolf or serpent facing its tail – see the Jewellery Gallery.<\/a><\/em>
A post medieval dress hook \u2013 see the Domestic & Household Gallery.<\/a><\/em>
A Norwich farthing token dated 1667 \u2013 see the Tokens & Jettons Gallery.<\/a><\/em>
An Elizabeth I sixpence of 1571 \u2013 see the Tudor Gallery.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

August 2022<\/strong> – Many extra images were added to the James Bensley<\/a><\/em> and Francis family<\/a><\/em> pages created in June and July.
New exhibits were added to the following Martham Museum<\/a><\/em> pages: ‘Jewellery’<\/a><\/em>; ‘Medieval coins’<\/a><\/em>; ‘Saxon coins’<\/a> <\/em>and ‘Stuart coins’<\/a><\/em>.
Technical amendments were made to every page to improve the possibility that pages will be found when people carry out general web searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

July 2022<\/strong> – A new page was added about James Robert Bensley<\/a><\/em> (Jimmy the coach operator).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

June 2022.<\/strong> A new page was added featuring the Francis family<\/a><\/em>, shop keepers and business men, from 1836 to c1967<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May 2022: <\/strong>You can see a wonderful 14th century silver seal matrix that depicts a female figure that has been added to the Museum. Click HERE.<\/a><\/em>
Further information has been added about the early years of the Island Site.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 2022:<\/strong> New pages were added about the history of the Martham Telephone Service <\/a><\/em>and Wherrymen of Martham.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

Special release in March 2022:<\/strong> A major upgrade was added to the site to provide a (virtual) village museum.<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

March 2022: <\/strong>New pages were added about the life and times of the grocer & draper William Creasey (1717-1797)<\/a><\/em> and his daughter Diana (1757-1834)<\/a><\/em>. They were rich and well connected in 18th century Martham and Diana gave a generous endowment to provide education for poor girls in the village.<\/p>\n

February 2022:<\/strong> New pages were added about the history of the Clowes’<\/a><\/em> building on The Green and The Firs, Rollesby Road<\/a><\/em> (now called The Oaks).<\/p>\n

January 2022:<\/strong> 229 photographs were added to St Mary the Virgin graveyard<\/a><\/em> pages recording all the gravestones in section I of the graveyard up to the year 2000. This completes a unique photographic record on this website of all the gravestones providing just over 1,100 images.<\/p>\n

December 2021:<\/strong> The following pages were added: one about Bell Yard<\/a><\/em>, another about ‘Floods’ <\/a><\/em>which includes nine photos and another about The Limes, Black Street<\/a><\/em>. Two pages about people were added: one for Oswald George Larter (1907-1965)<\/a> <\/em>and another about John Larter (1868-1951)<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

November 2021: <\/strong>Memories of Moregrove during the war years by Joe Larter <\/a><\/em>were added. A new page about the fascinating story of The Wilderness <\/a><\/em>at 30 Repps Road was added.<\/p>\n

October 2021: <\/strong>A new main menu topic was added called ‘Guided Informal Walks’<\/a> b<\/em>ased on maps. Three walks have been provided. They are around the Village Greens<\/a><\/em>, along Black Street<\/a><\/em> and along White Street<\/a><\/em>. The maps have markers showing points of interest which, when selected, give more details of the building or place.
A technical upgrade was completed improving the look and functionality of hyperlinks.<\/p>\n

September 2021:<\/strong> Pages were added about Elijah Jeary and the miracle cure<\/a><\/em>, and the Reverend William T E Cary,<\/a><\/em> and a personal account of Fruit Picking by schoolgirl Kathleen Fathers<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

August 2021:<\/strong> Pages were added about Ivy Cottage, Ivydene & Ivy Holme<\/a><\/em> plus also the Jeary family of butchers.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

July 2021:<\/strong> Pages were added about Cobblers Cottage<\/a> <\/em>(Mountfields) and the Fish & Chip Shop.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

June 2021:<\/strong> Pages were added about Domesday Martham<\/a><\/em>, Yew Tree Cottage<\/a><\/em>, Selwyn House<\/a><\/em> and Chapman’s Butchers plus The Walnuts.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

May 2021:<\/strong> A page was added about George Humphrey Dyball (1860-1950) and his wife Mary, nee Springall (1865-1955)<\/a><\/em> and information was added about Greenside, The Green<\/a><\/em> where they lived.
The home page <\/a><\/em>‘past and present’ photograph panel had 30 new images added to it. A logo was added to the main menu pages.<\/p>\n

April 2021:<\/strong> Details were added about the Garnham family of Martham<\/a><\/em> and an associated page about Clarence Villa <\/a><\/em>(Martham Lodge Residential Care Home). Also a new page about William Kirkland (1848-1937) & his son Robert and their drapers store.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

March 2021:<\/strong> A page was added about the history of the vicars of St Mary’s<\/a><\/em> plus thumbnail sketches of 24 individual vicars and curates. The 900 year history of the Prior’s Manor<\/a><\/em> was added. Also a new page about the Stowe Survey.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

September 2020:<\/strong> New personal profile pages on Francis Blomefield<\/a><\/em>, Rev. George Pearse<\/a><\/em>, Rev Joseph John Gurney<\/a><\/em> & the Gunton family<\/a><\/em> were added. New pages were added on the Star Inn<\/a><\/em>, Victoria Inn<\/a><\/em> and Bottle Hall Cottages.<\/a><\/em>
The website now has 279 pages of information, 65 photo albums and 3,631 photographs.<\/p>\n

Personal profiles were added for Elijah Gymer <\/a><\/em>(1855-1891); David & Anna Hinderer<\/a><\/em>; George & Susannah Amis and their daughters Christina & Betsy<\/a>; Henry Hodds (1842-1884<\/a><\/em>); Ernest Henry William Twite<\/a>; Humphrey Gymer (1865-1953) & Jane, nee Ward (1865-1934)<\/a>; George William Cooke <\/a><\/em>and additional information about the Bane Family in general<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

June 2020:<\/strong> Details about Martham’s windmills\/wind pumps were added. These were Hemsby Road windmills<\/a><\/em>; Repps Road smock mill<\/a><\/em>; Bracey’s wind pump<\/a><\/em>; Martham Boatbuilding wind pump<\/a><\/em> and the Pits Skeleton wind pump<\/a><\/em>. Plus information about some windmill millers: James Bane (1768-1834)<\/a><\/em>; James Bane (1793-1861)<\/a><\/em>; James William Bane (1869-1963)<\/a><\/em>; William Barnard Crowe (1798-1856)<\/a><\/em>; James Cooper Faulke (1819-1883)<\/a><\/em>; James Coper Faulke (1857-1905)<\/a><\/em>; William Wells (1781-1846)<\/a><\/em> and William Harrison Wells (1805-1874)<\/a><\/em>. Pages describing all the Footpaths <\/a><\/em>in the village were added and a page about Fairs & Carnivals.<\/a><\/em> A personal profile page for William Lack (1819-1898)<\/a><\/em> was added. Finally a page about the property called Sunnyside <\/a><\/em>in Damgate the home of a sail maker. The website now has 65 photo albums and over 2,560 photographs.<\/p>\n
