{"id":5425,"date":"2020-04-06T21:04:22","date_gmt":"2020-04-06T20:04:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5425"},"modified":"2026-07-01T18:31:45","modified_gmt":"2026-07-01T17:31:45","slug":"linford-family","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5425","title":{"rendered":"Linford family of Martham"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Linford family<\/strong> <strong>of Martham<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"moses\">Moses &amp; Martha Linford<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Moses was born in about 1777 and was baptised on 24<sup>th<\/sup> August 1777 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\">St Mary\u2019s.<\/a><\/em> His parents were William Linford &amp; Sarah, nee Frosdick. \u00a0In 1792 he was employed as an apprentice wheelwright to William Woods and on 6<sup>th<\/sup> October 1805 he married Martha Slegg (sometime recorded as Stagg) at Great Yarmouth. They had at least four children and lived at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4074\">Black Street <\/a><\/em>where Moses appeared in the Martham <a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5428\">P<em>oll Book<\/em><\/a> as eligible to vote in West Flegg which means that at that stage he was a property owner. When his father, William, died in 1822 Moses inherited all his land a property. This included the land shown on the 1812 Inclosure Award map below. Moses and his wife were lifelong Baptists and there used to be monuments to them both displayed in the present <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1217\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Baptist Church<\/a><\/em> on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The Green<\/a><\/em> but they are no longer on view. She is listed as owning five plots. Key to these were plots 663, 664,and 667 which were adjacent to each other on the east side of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5792\">White Street<\/a><\/em> and would later be the trading point of her son William&#8217;s grocery store. She also owned plot 686 which today is Hollydene House in the centre of the village. By 1842 it was known as plot 691. He also owned plots 31 (arable land), 365, 486 &amp; 487 which were marshes.  Plot 691 was listed as being a brick ground which basically meant that the brickearth soil there was good for making bricks. He is recorded as being a grocer in<em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6642\"> Kelly&#8217;s <\/a><\/em>Directory of 1845 and he remained as a grocer and draper at the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5792\">White Street<\/a><\/em> store until his death in 1882 as shown in every census from 1851 to 1881 inclusive. William\u2019s wife was Marianne (nee Mallett)&nbsp;and she appears in the 1883 copy of White&#8217;s Directory at Martham but had retired by 1891 and lived at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4111\">Repps Road<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">After his death William&#8217;s store passed into the hands of <a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5804\"><em>James Pyman<\/em>.<\/a>  James gave his name to the store but the same premises had been owned by the Linford family at least as far back as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6402\">1842<\/a><\/em>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">There are three Linfords in the family grave at the <a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1217#bapgrave\">Baptist graveyard<\/a> at Oak Tree Close.  Moses is not recorded but grave number 9 is that of William Linford who died on 16<sup>th<\/sup> March 1882 aged 68.  As we have seen above William had married Marianne Mallett in 1843 and spent almost all his adult life as a grocer and draper from his shop in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5792\">White Street<\/a><\/em>. Being a man and an owner of a premises worth more than \u00a350 he was eligible to vote and appeared in all the West Flegg <a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5428\">Register of Elector<\/a> lists from 1853 to 1882. During this time voting was not seen as a universal right but as a privilege for the wealthiest class of society. In 1853 only 67 people were entitled to vote in the whole of West Flegg and this had grown to 92 in 1882 by which time it included men who could afford to pay rent for property of at least \u00a312 per year.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Plot-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5492\" style=\"width:214px;height:285px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Plot-9.jpg 600w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Plot-9-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 85vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Plot 9<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Grave number 10 is of William Joshua the son of William &amp; Marianne.
