In the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6318\">1812 Inclosure Award<\/a> <\/em>it was listed as one of the five King&#8217;s Highways entering Martham <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=376\">Green<\/a><\/em> (the others being what we now know as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4121\">Rollesby Road<\/a><\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4111\">Repps Road,<\/a><\/em> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5792\">White Street <\/a><\/em>and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4260\">Hemsby Road<\/a><\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Before the 1900&#8217;s the street had properties at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=376\">The Green<\/a><\/em> end and near the church but nothing in between except fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">During the early 20th century it was called Church Street but not consistently &#8211; there is a mixture of the two names in the 1911 census. Some post cards of the same period call it Church Street as does the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=7336\">1939 Register.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"668\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Street-milk-van-1024x668.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22808\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Street-milk-van-1024x668.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Street-milk-van-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Street-milk-van-768x501.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Street-milk-van-1536x1001.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Street-milk-van-2048x1335.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Street-milk-van-1200x782.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Black-Street-milk-van-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Another photo looking south which is marked Church Street on the back so probably dates to around 1935. The delivery van belonged to Sidney Gaze who was delivering milk from his farm at Rollesby.  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Local people say that Black Street was for funerals going to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\">St Mary&#8217;<\/a><\/em>s whereas <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5792\">White Street<\/a><\/em> was for weddings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Long since demolished <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=23438#provy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Providence Place<\/a><\/em> was a small courtyard of poor quality houses just off Black Street accessed by a passage between what is now No 24 and the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=11514\">Oddfellows Hall.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In November 1892 an influenza outbreak in Flegg laid many low. There was also an outbreak of typhoid fever in Martham in the autumn of 1894 which had much to do with the poor state of the drains particularly in Black Street which were insufficient to carry the sewage away.
