{"id":34196,"date":"2026-03-23T15:49:45","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T15:49:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=34196"},"modified":"2026-03-23T15:49:45","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T15:49:45","slug":"john-carrier-of-martham-1748-1826","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=34196","title":{"rendered":"John Carrier of Martham (1748-1826)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>John Carrier of Martham (1748-1826)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">John CARRIER was born 3<sup>rd<\/sup> May 1748 as the first child of John CARRIER &amp; Mary, nee MALTON of Syderstone, Norfolk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">When he was 27, he married Elizabeth POLLARD by license on 8<sup>th<\/sup> May 1775 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\">St Mary the Virgin,<\/a><\/em> Martham by which time he was already a farmer. John &amp; Elizabeth had the following children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>William CARRIER who was born in 1776 in Martham. He married Mary Porter at St Nicholas Church, Great Yarmouth on 16<sup>th<\/sup> October 1827. They lived at Rollesby where he died 1<sup>st<\/sup> October 1834.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Elizabeth CARRIER who was born on 10<sup>th<\/sup> March 1780 in Martham. &nbsp;She married Robert PORTER on 16<sup>th<\/sup> October 1820 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\">&nbsp;St Mary the Virgin,<\/a><\/em> Martham. It would be tempting to think that Mary and Robert Porter were related but I have not been able to prove or disprove it. Elizabeth died at Burgh St Margaret but was buried at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\">St Mary the Virgin,<\/a><\/em> Martham on 11<sup>th<\/sup> October 1853. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">John had established himself as a farmer and land owner and in 1798 he was listed in the Martham Land Tax Redemption records as the owner of two parcels of land in Martham occupied by Charles Carrier (who was probably his brother). The payment for one was \u00a38 and the other \u00a33 10s&nbsp; 0d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">At the time of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6318\">1807 Martham Inclosure Act<\/a><\/em> John claimed ownership of a total of 22 acres, 1 rood &amp; 2 perches of land being plot numbers 104a, 137, 157, 164, 168, 324, 325, &amp; 327a as shown in the two maps below that were prepared by the General Commissions during the early part of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6318\">Inclosure<\/a><\/em> process. This included land where he lived near the east side of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=371#bracey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Back Land (Bracey&#8217;s) pond<\/a><\/em> called Carriers Farm (plot No164); ownership of two houses with shops, outhouses and gardens occupied by tenants in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4074\">Black Street <\/a><\/em>(plot Nos 324, 325 &amp; 327a), Also, 17 acres, 2 roods &amp; 5 perches of arable and pasture land that he held copyhold of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=3384\">Manor of Martham<\/a><\/em> (plots 104a,137, 157 &amp; 168); plus another 2 acres, 3 roods &amp; 2 perches of land and a double cottage that he owned freehold. Showing plots 324, 325 &amp; 327a.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">When the actual I<em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6318\">nclosure Award <\/a><\/em>was completed John was allotted two plots of land under <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6318\">1812 Martham Inclosure Award<\/a><\/em> as follows:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;FIRST, one piece of land marked No24 containing by measure three acres and twenty-eight perches bounded by the public road secondly described towards the north; by land hereby allotted to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=10725\">William Wells<\/a><\/em> towards the east; the private road sixthly described&nbsp;towards the south and by land belonging to the said Thomas Grove towards the west.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;SECOND and one other piece of land marked No49 containing by measure three acres, one rood and twenty-eight perches bounded by and belonging to John Ensor towards the north; by an ancient lane towards the north-east; by land hereby allotted to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=9953\">John Pollard<\/a><\/em> towards the south and land belonging to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=9953\">John Pollard <\/a><\/em>and Thomas Lusher respectively towards the west.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The two plots are shown on the map below.&nbsp; These two plots amounted to 6 acres, 2 roods and 16 perches so between 1807 and 1812 it seems John must have either sold some of the copyhold land he had claimed in 1807 or was able to buy it so that it became freehold. The freehold land he owned was not included in the 1812 Award.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"728\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-Carrier-1812-map-728x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34203\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7107851778725804;width:300px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-Carrier-1812-map-728x1024.jpg 728w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-Carrier-1812-map-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-Carrier-1812-map-768x1080.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-Carrier-1812-map-1092x1536.jpg 1092w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-Carrier-1812-map-1200x1688.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/John-Carrier-1812-map.jpg 1365w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 728px) 85vw, 728px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Plots 24 &amp; 49 allotted to John Carrier under the 1812 Martham Inclosure Award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In a unique record John is listed in the title deeds of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=31635\">Loxwood Villa,<\/a><\/em> <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4111\">Repps Road<\/a><\/em> as a Yeoman owner of a meadow called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=31635\">Clamps Close <\/a><\/em>that was just over one acre and is shown in the map below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"622\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Clamps-Close-1812-map-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22536\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Clamps-Close-1812-map-001.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Clamps-Close-1812-map-001-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Clamps-Close-1812-map-001-768x467.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Clamps Close identified on the 1812 Martham Inclosure Award map.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">His tenure of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=31635\">Clamps Close<\/a><\/em> was freehold and the deeds of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=31635\">Loxwood Villa<\/a><\/em> include an Abstract of Title dated 1822 that confirms this situation.&nbsp; On 29th\/30th November 1822 John sold <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=31635\">Clamps Close<\/a><\/em> to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=32991\">Mark Pratt,<\/a><\/em> a glove maker, from Martham for \u00a3150. The land was later split and sold in a number of plots one of which had <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=31635\">Loxwood Villa<\/a><\/em> built on it. Later in life John &amp;&nbsp; Elizabeth moved to Rollesby where she died in 1820 and he died in 1826.
