Walter Harriss and his family are good examples.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"159\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Walter-Harriss.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32080\" style=\"width:227px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Walter Harriss<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Walter was born on 10<sup>th<\/sup> December 1874 at Filby to John &amp; Ann HARRISS. His mother\u2019s maiden name was SWANN. He grew up at Filby where his father was a harness maker and by the time he was sixteen he had become a carpenter. When he was 22, he married Naomi Leah DYBALL on 20<sup>th<\/sup> April 1897 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary the Virgin, Martham.<\/a><\/em> Naomi was one of 14 children of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=28806#TDyb1831\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Thomas &amp; Maria DYBALL,<\/a><\/em> formerly KERRISON. The DYBALL\u2019s were longstanding residents of Martham and her grandfather was Humphrey DYBALL (1795-1883)<em> <\/em>who was a successful farmer, well known for writing a farming diary. You can read more about him by clicking <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=8869\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">HERE<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Walter &amp; Naomi had ten children who you can read more about below. They had two of these children when they were living with Naomi\u2019s parents at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=31569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Mill Farm House, Hemsby Road <\/a><\/em>in 1901. By this time Walter had become established as a carpenter and wheelwright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">By 1911 Walter &amp; Naomi and their growing family were living at Milton House, Caister-on-Sea where they lived from at least 1909 to 1913, and where three of their children were born and baptised. Those children were Edna, Miriam &amp; Philip. By that time Walter had extended his skills still further and was a coach builder. By 1921 they had ten children and had moved back to Martham living at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">White Street<\/a><\/em> where Walter ran his business from a yard that included their home. The approximate position of the yard is shown in red on the map below. Their son Freddy became a harness maker. Philip became a bricklayer. Later on, Eric became a carpenter. Their son Alfred was a wheelwright and later became a carpenter and builder. There was a blacksmith shop on the right of the yard where Alfred also made coffins and ladders. Alfred\u2019s grandson Chris Hewitt recalled in 2025 how he would pump the bellows in the forge there as a boy. Chris did his apprenticeship there in the 1970\u2019s and after his grandfather died in 1958 his side of the family became builders known as HM Harriss &amp; Son the initials being based on his grandmother\u2019s forenames Helen May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">On top of being a master of his craft Walter was a community man and was the Parish Clerk at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary the Virgin<\/a><\/em> between 1919-1946 fully supported by Naomi. The large wheels made it easier to be pulled by a small horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Children of Walter &amp; Naomi<\/strong><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Walter &amp; Naomi had ten children, seven of whom were born and baptised at Martham whilst Edna (1909), Miriam (1911) and Philip (1913) were born and baptised at Caister-on-Sea. Their children were:- <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Walter Arbon HARRISS who was born on 1<sup>st<\/sup> September 1897 and baptised at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary the Virgin<\/a><\/em> on 3<sup>rd<\/sup> October the same year. Walter remained single and was living with his parents at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">White Street<\/a><\/em> in 1921 &amp; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=7336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">1939<\/a><\/em>, by which time he was 42 and was a painter working in the family business. Dorothy Mabel HARRISS was known as Dolly and was born on 12th August 1899 and baptised at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary the Virgin<\/a><\/em> on 10<sup>th<\/sup> September 1899. She married local fisherman Benjamin NICOLS on 26<sup>th<\/sup> December 1928 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em>. Alfred Claude HARRISS who was born on 14<sup>th<\/sup> September 1901 and baptised a month later on 13<sup>th<\/sup> October at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em>. He became a wheelwright, working at first with his father but later in his own right as a carpenter and builder after his father died. He married Helen May TOOKE on 27<sup>th<\/sup> August 1924 at St Mary the Virgin. During 1946-1958 Alfred followed in the footsteps of his father by becoming the Parish Clerk at St Mary\u2019s and there is a small lectern in the church that commemorates his service. He died on 9<sup>th<\/sup> January 1958 at Gorleston Hospital, Great Yarmouth, aged 56. After his death the Harriss firm continued under the name H.M. Harriss &amp; Son based on the forenames of his wife Helen May.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">4. Frederick Charles HARRISS, was known as Freddy, and was born on 9<sup>th<\/sup> September 1904 and was baptised at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> on 9<sup>th<\/sup> October that year. Maud Augusta HARRISS was born on 16<sup>th<\/sup> February 1907 at Martham and was baptised at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> on 24<sup>th<\/sup> March that year. She married Herbert Ernest William MURRELL in 1928 at Great Yarmouth. She died on 25<sup>th<\/sup> August 1988 at 118 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Repps Road, Martham<\/a><\/em> aged 81 and is buried with her son Alan at section I, plot L10 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1747\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2019s graveyard.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">6. Edna Violet HARRISS was born on 24<sup>th<\/sup> January 1909 at Caister-on-Sea and was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Caister on 14<sup>th<\/sup> February 1909. She married Thomas TUBBY on 16<sup>th<\/sup> May 1932 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary the Virgin.<\/a><\/em> Edna died on 20<sup>th<\/sup> November 1986 at Great Yarmouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:15% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" height=\"325\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Evelyn-Miriam-Randell-gravestone.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32120 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Evelyn-Miriam-Randell-gravestone.jpg 220w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Evelyn-Miriam-Randell-gravestone-203x300.jpg 203w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 85vw, 220px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">7. Evelyn Miriam HARRISS, known as Miriam, was born on 18<sup>th<\/sup> July 1911 at Caister-on-Sea. She married Roy Simeon RANDELL on 15<sup>th<\/sup> June 1940 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary the Virgin<\/a><\/em>. Roy and Miriam both died at their home at 73 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Black Street<\/a><\/em>: Roy on&nbsp; 22<sup>nd<\/sup> March 1987 and Miriam on 18<sup>th<\/sup> January 1989. Ferdinand Philip Sidney HARRISS, known as Philip, was born on 28<sup>th<\/sup> October 1913 at Caister-on-Sea and was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Caister on 7<sup>th<\/sup> December 1913.&nbsp; He married Minnie Irene KING in 1940 at Winterton-on-Sea at which time he was a bricklayer working with family members on their building projects that included 114 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Repps Road <\/a><\/em>where they lived later in life. Philip died on 21<sup>st<\/sup> October 1980 and Minnie on 20<sup>th<\/sup> August 2001 and they were both buried at section I, plot J9 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1747\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2018s graveyard.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">9. Leonard Jack HARRISS, known as Jack, who was born on 2<sup>nd<\/sup> September 1918 and baptised at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> on 30<sup>th<\/sup> of the same month. He married Gertrude Madeline TUNGATE on 6<sup>th<\/sup> March 1943 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary the Virgin<\/a><\/em>. Leonard died on 3<sup>rd<\/sup> December 1978 at 112 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Repps Road, Martham<\/a><\/em>, aged 60 and is buried at section I, plot I9 but has no gravestone. Gertrude died on 1<sup>st<\/sup> November 2008.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">10. Eric Ralph HARRISS (also known as Tim) was born on 5<sup>th<\/sup> March 1921 and baptised on 24<sup>th<\/sup> at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em>. He married Olive Joan TURNER in 1948. Eric died on 28<sup>th<\/sup> February 1971 and was buried at section I, plot H19 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1747\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2019s graveyard<\/a><\/em> but has no gravestone. Olive died on 9<sup>th<\/sup> June 1984 at 116 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Repps Road<\/a><\/em> and was buried in the same plot as Eric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">As the family grew, they made use of their many complementary skills and the business diversified more and more as can be seen from the following advert in the Parish Magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"409\" height=\"618\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Harriss-advert.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32124\" style=\"width:291px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Harriss-advert.jpg 409w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Harriss-advert-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 409px) 85vw, 409px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The skills of the family were put to good use when Walter had several houses built around the village for his children. It is likely that his son Alfred had a big hand in this as a builder but some of the other sons had complementary skills. (Walter Jnr. was a painter, Philip was a bricklayer, Eric was a carpenter). Foremost of the houses was a terrace of four built in 1933 at 112, 114, 116 &amp; 118 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Repps Road<\/a><\/em>. They are shown in the photo below and mentioned in the narrative above. Some other members of the family also still live in bungalows built next to the former yard in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">White Street<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/112-118-Repps-Road-Martham-5-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32126\" style=\"width:568px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/112-118-Repps-Road-Martham-5-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/112-118-Repps-Road-Martham-5-1024x737.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/112-118-Repps-Road-Martham-5-768x553.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/112-118-Repps-Road-Martham-5-1536x1106.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/112-118-Repps-Road-Martham-5-2048x1475.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/112-118-Repps-Road-Martham-5-1200x864.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/112-118-Repps-Road-Martham-5-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Naomi died on 1<sup>st<\/sup> January 1940 and Walter died at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2019s,<\/a><\/em> whilst putting the hymns list up, on 8<sup>th<\/sup> October 1946 \u2013 dedicated to the community to his last moment.
