{"id":26713,"date":"2024-06-29T13:24:20","date_gmt":"2024-06-29T12:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=26713"},"modified":"2025-08-15T16:30:48","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T15:30:48","slug":"martham-marriage-bonds","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=26713","title":{"rendered":"Martham Marriage Bonds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Martham Marriage Bonds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tucked away in the Norfolk Records Office are copies of nine Marriage Bonds (under ref: PD 710\/29) that apply to marriages that took place at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary the Virgin, Martham.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A marriage bond is a type of guarantee that two people were legally available to marry each other. It was a pledge or guarantee, normally given by the groom, to a court affirming that there was no moral or legal reason why the couple could not be married and also that the groom would not change his mind. A marriage bond is legally distinct from a marriage licence or a marriage certificate, although all three types of records are used in genealogical research as evidence of marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The date recorded in the marriage bond may not (and likely does not) match the actual date the marriage took place. Marriage bonds were often used by those wanting to circumvent a reading of the banns for the traditional three-week period. They were particularly popular during the 2<sup>nd <\/sup>World War when couples wanted to marry but the groom could not get sufficiently long leave to marry by banns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If one of the parties was a minor (under 21) then parental permission was needed for the marriage and the bond includes details of the consent given by the parent(s). The nine local marriage bonds are for the following couples:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Robert Charles BROOK &amp; Dorothy Gladys BROWN.<\/strong><br>Robert was a carpenter\u2019s labourer, aged 20, from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Damgate,<\/a><\/em> Martham and Dorothy was 21 also from Martham. As Robert was a minor the consent of his father John Brook was also recorded. The bond was dated 9<sup>th<\/sup> April 1945 and the couple were married at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> on 28<sup>th<\/sup> April.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"679\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Robert-Brooke-Dorothy-Brown-marriage-bond-1945-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27838\" style=\"width:648px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Robert-Brooke-Dorothy-Brown-marriage-bond-1945-2.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Robert-Brooke-Dorothy-Brown-marriage-bond-1945-2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Robert-Brooke-Dorothy-Brown-marriage-bond-1945-2-768x509.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Charles William BROWN &amp; Iris Rosina Maud SIMS.<\/strong><br>Charles was 25 and Iris was 22 when they married. Charles worked with his father as a market gardener at Conyard Villa, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=12302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Cess<\/a><\/em>. Iris lived at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=3056\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Mustard Hyrn <\/a><\/em>where her father was a well-known horse slaughterman. Phyllis was 23, originally from Norwich and was born with the surname Groom but had adopted the surname of her stepfather. He was from Winterton and Lily was 23 from Martham. He was from Blackburn, Lancashire and when they married she was living at Gaze\u2019s Terrace, Cess Road. They were both from Martham. At the time of their marriage Henry was an agricultural labourer living at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Hemsby Road<\/a><\/em> and Olive lived with her parents at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=12302\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Cess<\/a><\/em>. As Rosemary was a minor the consent of her parents Frederick &amp; Marion Bannell were also recorded.
