He grew up at his parents home at The Tower Mill, Hill House, Hemsby. His father was the miller there and Oliver may have learnt the mechanical workings of the mill from an early age which would have given him a good grounding for his future career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In 1890 he was recorded in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=5428\"><em>electoral register&nbsp;<\/em><\/a>for Martham as being an engine fitter and he lived at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=21955\" title=\"\">Hope Cottage <\/a><\/em>which is a large thatched house on the east side of Martham <a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=376\" title=\"\"><em>Village Green<\/em>.<\/a> On 10th&nbsp;February 1892 Oliver married his cousin Laura May Thurtle, the daughter of Robert &amp; Anne Thurtle. They married at her home village of Ormesby St Margaret by which time Oliver was a self-employed agricultural engineer. Oliver &amp; Laura had six children who were all born whilst they lived at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=21955\" title=\"\">Hope Cottage<\/a><\/em>. They were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Frank Oliver Starling who was born on 22nd\u00a0June 1895. In 1925 he married Bertha Mabel Dyball of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=16339\">\u2018Greenside\u2019\u00a0<\/a>across the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=376\" title=\"\">Village Green.<\/a><\/em> Frank died in 1970 and Bertha in 1974.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alec Leslie Starling who was born on 26th\u00a0July 1897 but sadly died the following year, aged one.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ralph George Starling who was born on 26th\u00a0September 1899. He married Margaret Thurtle (no relation to his mother) in 1932. Ralph died at Dover, Kent in 1969. Ralph was known as Ray.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Eric Robert Starling who was born on 23rd\u00a0January 1903. He married Edith Eleanor Barnes in 1932. Eric died at East Dereham in 1978.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marjorie May Starling (known as Mardie) who was born on 28th\u00a0August 1905 and married James Kirkland at Great Yarmouth in 1932. Marjorie died in Surrey in 1976.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Olive Mary Starling was born in 1911 but tragedy struck again when she died aged only 18 months.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"855\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Oliver-Starling-Methodist-centenery-meeting-1907-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21982\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Oliver-Starling-Methodist-centenery-meeting-1907-001.jpg 855w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Oliver-Starling-Methodist-centenery-meeting-1907-001-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Oliver-Starling-Methodist-centenery-meeting-1907-001-768x495.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=21955\" title=\"\">Hope Cottage<\/a><\/em> is shown above. You can see that someone has written the name Oliver Starling on this photo of the cottage thus confirming who lived there. They have also written \u201cMartham Centenary Camp Meeting\u201d which refers to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1219\"><em>Methodist&nbsp;<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;Centenary of 1907 which dates the photo to that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=21955\" title=\"\">Hope Cottage<\/a><\/em> was a large property but perhaps their growing family needed more space or Oliver was just becoming more successful because as 1915 approached he was able to buy a meadow on which he had a new house built.<br>The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=372\" title=\"\">railway<\/a><\/em> had arrived in Martham in 1878 slicing through a field to the east of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4121\" title=\"\">Rollesby Road.<\/a><\/em> This created a portion of land to the north of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=372\" title=\"\">railway<\/a><\/em> line outlined in red on the 1906 OS map shown below. Ivy died in 1949 and Oliver on 21st&nbsp;July 1950. Oliver and Laura are buried together at<a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1747\" title=\" St&nbsp;Mary the Virgin graveyard&nbsp;\"> St&nbsp;Mary the Virgin graveyard&nbsp;<\/a>section H, plot K1.
