William was from Buxton, Norfolk and Elizabeth was from Martham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">James had seven siblings and grew up with them and his parents at Martham where his father was at various times a thatcher, farrier and towards the end of his life a farmer. His father also owned just over 15 acres of land in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6402\">1842<\/a><\/em> spread across various parts of Martham which included at Back Lane where the family lived and James grew up learning the art of thatching from his father. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">James married twice. When he was 25, he married Sarah Woods on 4<sup>th<\/sup> February 1834 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\">St Mary the Virgin<\/a><\/em>. James &amp; Sarah had the following children at Martham and they were all baptised at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\">St Mary the Virgin<\/a><\/em> as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\">\n<li>James who was born in 1834 and was baptised on 1<sup>st<\/sup> May 1834, he married Harriet Harbord at Catfield, Norfolk on 1<sup>st<\/sup> October 1863. &nbsp;He died at Wickham Market, Suffolk in 1875.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ann Elizabeth who was born on 6<sup>th<\/sup> November 1840 and was baptised two days later. She died at Martham aged two and was buried at <a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1747\"><em>St Mary the Virgin<\/em> graveyard<\/a>, section F, plot. O14.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thirza who was born on 23<sup>rd<\/sup> September 1842 and was baptised two days later. She died aged nine and was buried at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1747\">St Mary the Virgin, graveyard,<\/a><\/em> section F, plot. O13.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alfred who was born on 4<sup>th<\/sup> &nbsp;October 1844 and was baptised on the same day as his brother Ambrose on 11<sup>th<\/sup> July 1852. He married Emily Scott at St Mary\u2019s Church, St Leonard, Bromley on 18<sup>th<\/sup> July 1872. Alfred died in 1932 at Edmonton, Middlesex.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ambrose who was born on 19<sup>th<\/sup> February 1847 and was baptised on the same day as his brother Alfred on 11<sup>th<\/sup> July 1852. He died in June 1866, aged 19, and was buried at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1747\">St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> in an unknown grave.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">By the time of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1325\">1841 census<\/a><\/em> James &amp; Sarah were living with their first two children at what would later be known as 26 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=376\">The Green<\/a><\/em> or <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=16655\">Chapman\u2019s Butchers\/The Walnuts<\/a><\/em> and he was a thatcher.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"916\" height=\"510\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chapmans-Butchers-Aug-1912.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chapmans-Butchers-Aug-1912.jpg 916w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chapmans-Butchers-Aug-1912-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chapmans-Butchers-Aug-1912-768x428.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">When the Braddock family lived here Chapman&#8217;s butcher had not been built on the front. The Braddocks lived in the thatched house shown to the rear. This photo was taken in August 1912.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">James was listed in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6402\">1842 Martham Tithe Award<\/a><\/em> as the owner of 4 acres and 9 perches of land, houses, marsh and gardens being plots 172, 314, 315 and 484 in Martham. Plot 314 was immediately in front of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=371#twins\">pond <\/a><\/em>and was the house and premises where he lived as shown above. Plot 315 was known as Laurel Cottage and was let to &#8216;Jay &amp; others&#8217; (the family of John Jay and his wife Mary). Plot 484 was a marsh next to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=9324#cessstath\">Cess Boat Dyke Staithe<\/a><\/em> on the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=373\">River T<\/a><\/em>hurne.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-Braddock-1842-Tithe-Award-plots-172-314-001.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22676\" width=\"768\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-Braddock-1842-Tithe-Award-plots-172-314-001.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-Braddock-1842-Tithe-Award-plots-172-314-001-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/James-Braddock-1842-Tithe-Award-plots-172-314-001-768x533.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 85vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6402\">1842 Martham Tithe Award<\/a> map<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 27%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Plot 172 was a long strip of land with a pightle (a small field or enclosure with a cottage) on it. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=12000\">The cottage<\/a><\/em> &#8211; shown right- is so tiny it hardly features in any records of the time but was listed in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6402\">Tithe Award<\/a><\/em> as being owned by James Braddock who lived next door. Note the hay, or thatch, next to the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=12000\">cottage <\/a><\/em>which may have been his stock in trade. Even though James &nbsp;owned <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=12000\">the cottage<\/a><\/em> it was occupied from around <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1325\">1841<\/a><\/em> until 1866 by Mary Beaton and her daughter Ellen. You can read more about the cottage by clicking on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=12000\">\u201cThe Cottage\u201d.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"472\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/1880-Twin-ponds-cottage.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12002 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/1880-Twin-ponds-cottage.jpg 472w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/1880-Twin-ponds-cottage-295x300.jpg 295w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 472px) 85vw, 472px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">James &amp; Sarah were still at No26 at the time of the 1851 census but Sarah died, aged 44, in 1853 and was buried on 15<sup>th<\/sup> March that year at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1747\">St Mary the Virgin graveyard<\/a><\/em>, section F, plot. O13 in the same place as her daughter Thirza.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Thirza-Sarah-Braddock-gravestone.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16678\" width=\"389\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Thirza-Sarah-Braddock-gravestone.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Thirza-Sarah-Braddock-gravestone-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Thirza-Sarah-Braddock-gravestone-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 389px) 85vw, 389px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1747\">St Mary The Virgin graveyard,<\/a> section F, plot O13<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">James was married again on 4<sup>th<\/sup> January 1857 at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\">St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> to Sarah Jones the daughter of John Jones &amp; Elizabeth, nee Burton. Before they were married James lived at 26 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=376\">The Green<\/a><\/em> and Sarah lived with her parents next door but one at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=16339\">No30 (Greenside)<\/a><\/em>. In 1858 they had a son called Edwin who lived in Martham all his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">James continued to work as a thatcher throughout the 1860\u2019s until the 1871 census that tells us he had become a farmer of 23 acres employing a labourer. The interesting fact from the 1871 census is that he and Sarah were recorded as living at Pit Farm, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=376\">The Green <\/a><\/em>but there is no reason to believe they had moved because older locals sometimes call the main <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=371#twins\">pond<\/a><\/em> in front of the house \u2018the pit\u2019 which may have been named after the farm or the other way round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">James died on 1<sup>st<\/sup> September 1879 at Martham and Sarah on 6<sup>th<\/sup> November 1882.
