Thomas Rising was born in about 1777 in Martham and was baptised on 8th<\/sup> July that year. His parents were Thomas Rising & Mary, nee Burton. When he was 23, he married Ann Cadge at St Peter & St John, Hoveton on 6th<\/sup> May 1800. Thomas & Ann had seven children as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.2.2.2.1 Mary Ann Rising<\/strong> was born on 17th September 1801 at Martham and was baptised at St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> on 20th<\/sup> September that year. She died on 5th<\/sup> November 1826 at Great Yarmouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.2.2.2.2 Thomas Rising<\/strong> was born on 19th<\/sup> February 1804 at Martham and was baptised at St Mary\u2019s <\/a><\/em>on 20th<\/sup> of that month. Sadly, he died when he was only 11 and was buried at St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> on 31st<\/sup> August 1815 in an unknown grave but he does have one of the commemorative tiles in the aisle of the St Mary\u2019s.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

2.2.2.2.3 Jane Rising was born on 26th April 1806 at Martham and baptised the day after at St Mary\u2019s as the third child of Thomas Rising & Ann, nee Cadge. In 1851 she was living with her brother George at  Ivy Cottage, Martham. She remained a spinster and died at Martham on 19th February 1860 where she was buried on 24th of that month. Her gravestone can be seen at section A, plot K3 at St Mary\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.2.2.2.4 Edward Rising<\/strong> was born on 25th April 1808 at Martham and was baptised on 29th<\/sup> of that month at St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> as the fourth child of Thomas Rising & Ann, nee Cadge. He was only 26 when he died in 1834 in Martham and was buried at St Mary the Virgin <\/a><\/em>Graveyard Section C, plot A1. Edward also has a commemorative tile in the aisle of the St Mary\u2019s.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

2.2.2.2.5 Bridget Rising<\/strong> was born about 1810. She died in 1897 at Rollesby but was buried in an unknown plot at St Mary the Virgin<\/a><\/em>, Martham on 6th<\/sup> August 1897 aged 87.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.2.2.2.6  Charles Cadge Rising<\/strong> was born in 1818 at Martham and was baptised at St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> on 28th<\/sup> December 1818. He died only about nine months later on 18th<\/sup> October 1819 and was buried at St Mary\u2019s <\/a><\/em>in the family grave. Charles also has a commemorative tile in the aisle of the St Mary\u2019s.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

2.2.2.2.7  George Rising<\/a><\/em><\/strong> was born on 23rd<\/sup> July 1812 and was baptised on 26th<\/sup> of that month at St Mary the Virgin.<\/a><\/em> He married Bridget Christmas<\/a><\/em> at St George\u2019s Church, Rollesby on 12th<\/sup> February 1845. He owned just over 130 acres of land in the village in 1842<\/a><\/em> much of it inherited from his father. You can read more about  George<\/a><\/em> by clicking HERE<\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1812 Thomas Snr. was farming just over 97 acres of land around Martham as listed in the 1812 Inclosure Award <\/a><\/em>as plot numbers  26, 37, 41, 172, 173, 200 & 211. They are shown on the map below:<\/p>\n\n\n

These plots are more fully described as follows:
Plot No26 is a single field to the north of Hemsby Road<\/a><\/em> not far from Gibbet Hill<\/a><\/em>.
Plots 37 & 41 are fields between Pratt’s Loke<\/a><\/em> and Mill Lane<\/a><\/em> (the boundary between Martham and West Somerton).
Plots 172 & 173 were grazing meadows off Common Road<\/a><\/em>.
Plots 200 & 211 were fields next to what is now Thunder Hill Farm.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thomas Snr. died in the village in 1824 and was buried at St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> on 22nd<\/sup> October 1824 in an unknown plot but he is another of his family to be commemorated with a tile plaque in the main aisle of the Church as shown at the top of this page.<\/p>\n\n\n

The flat stone may have been moved from another grave point or inside the church as it refers to Ann, the relict of Thomas ‘above’ and there is nothing ‘above’.
The inscription says:-
“Also Ann, relict of the above
Thomas Rising. Died 16th June 1841. Aged 66.
By the side of his Brothers are interred the mortal remains of Edward the beloved son of Thomas & Ann Rising who departed this life 28th April 1834, aged 26 years.
Also Charles Cadge Rising, died 18th October 1818, aged 9 months.”<\/p>\n\n\n
