Shown in pink.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The Cottage was not named in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=6402\">1842 Tithe Award<\/a><\/em> but can been identified from the Award map as plot No8 which was owned by Thomas Sutfield Rising (1774-1855). He came from a farming family and his father had also farmed at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=3048\">Moregrove<\/a><\/em> when Tom was a baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In 1939 one of the pair of cottages was occupied by Ellen Elizabeth Howes who was a retired single lady.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Somerton-Road-snow-Jan-1940-1024x628.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13103\" width=\"804\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Somerton-Road-snow-Jan-1940-1024x628.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Somerton-Road-snow-Jan-1940-300x184.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Somerton-Road-snow-Jan-1940-768x471.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Somerton-Road-snow-Jan-1940.jpg 1071w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 804px) 85vw, 804px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Blackthorn Cottages in snow, January 1940<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Up until the late 1960&#8217;s the property still had many of its original features but at around that time suffered in a large fire after being hit by lightning resulting in the loss of the whole roof leading to extensive damage.
