Iron had many advantages over bronze and the technology of iron working spread rapidly throughout the period. The processes of the production of iron leave little trace and few iron smelting furnaces have been found.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Iron-Age-Terret-Ring.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1478\" width=\"258\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Iron-Age-Terret-Ring.jpg 800w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Iron-Age-Terret-Ring-300x269.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Iron-Age-Terret-Ring-768x688.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 258px) 85vw, 258px\" \/><figcaption>Iron Age terret harness mount<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Other signs of iron working, such as slag (waste) can be found more widely but were often moved from where the process actually took place. Bronze continued to be used during the period, especially for ceremonial or decorative objects but iron became the predominant material. The raw materials for making iron &#8211; iron ore and charcoal could be found widely across Britain and were available in Norfolk from gravel and greensand deposits in the west of the county.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Little is known about settlements in the Iron Age. Excavations have revealed small farmsteads, similar to those from the <a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=892\"><em>Bronze Age<\/em><\/a>, and these are often indicated only by ditches, pits&nbsp;and postholes.  The people of Iron Age Britain probably lived in family groups and&nbsp;would have been part of&nbsp;wider local groups, similar to modern villages or parishes. These local groups may have been part of a larger network of people with similar cultures, religions and beliefs&nbsp;called tribes. When the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1209\">Romans <\/a><\/em>invaded Britain they recorded the names of some of these tribes. The Iceni tribe lived in Norfolk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\".entry-content a {text-decoration: underline;} has-medium-font-size\">Iron Age finds are rare but a few have turned up in the Martham area including the wonderful terret harness mount shown at the top of this page which is in the shape of a bull or cow&#8217;s head found on the east side of the village by<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=730\">Jane Chaplin.<\/a><\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Iron-Age-woad-grinder-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1479\" width=\"321\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Iron-Age-woad-grinder-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Iron-Age-woad-grinder-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Iron-Age-woad-grinder-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Iron-Age-woad-grinder.jpg 1126w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 321px) 85vw, 321px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This is an Iron Age woad grinder and was again found by <a href=\"https:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=730\"><em>Jean Chaplin<\/em><\/a> in the parish.
