His parents were James Sims and Alice, nee Read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">When he was 2, Herbert was listed in the 1891 census living with his parents at Yarmouth Road, Ormesby St Margaret. His father was a market gardener and farmer. Herbert was also in the 1901 census with his parents living at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4260\">Hemsby Road<\/a><\/em> (probably Gibbet Hill), Martham when he was 12. In 1911 he was still with his parents at Gibbet Hill, Martham and was a market gardener&#8217;s labourer probably working with his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He served in the military in 1916 and was a Corporal with the 6th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Formerly 17032 Norfolk Regiment.
