Leslie Victor London (1895-1918) of Martham<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leslie is listed on the War Memorial <\/a><\/em>as one of those who gave his life during the First World War.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Leslie was born in May 1895 at Martham to Ann Elizabeth London. He was raised by his grandparents at Gibbet Hill on the Hemsby Road <\/a><\/em>where he appeared in the 1901 and 1911 census returns. His grandparents were John & Sarah London and they worked on the land. Leslie was also a farm labourer by the time he was 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He signed up for military service on 3rd<\/sup> June 1915 with the 1st\/1st Battalion, Cambridgeshire Regiment. Known as Private 328175 he saw action in France between 26th<\/sup> October 1916 and 2nd<\/sup> October 1917. Sadly, he caught TB and was discharged from the Army on 7th<\/sup> November 1917 as he was no longer fit for service.  He never really recovered and died on 5th<\/sup> July 1918.  He is buried in the graveyard at St Mary the Virgin <\/a><\/em>section H, plot D17 and he is recorded on the Martham War Memorial<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was commemorated by the Riders\u2019 Branch of the Royal British Legion when they came to Martham in July 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
