He was the third child of George Hayton &amp; Emma, nee Dove, and had six siblings. His father was Sexton and Parish Clerk at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\">St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> for many years in the late 1800\u2019s and early 1900\u2019s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">George attended the village <em><a href=\"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1396\">school<\/a><\/em> from October 1889 to June 1895 and left aged 13 to work on the land.&nbsp; He was listed in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census returns as living with his parents at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4074\">Black Street.<\/a><\/em> When he was 19, he was a carpenter&#8217;s labourer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">He joined the Army and was Private 6930 with the Norfolk Regiment. He was killed on 15<sup>th<\/sup> July 1918 at France &amp; Flanders when he was 36 and was buried at La Clythe Military Cemetery, Heuvelland, West-Vlaandeven, Belgium. (Plot V, row E, grave 1).
