George William Hayton<\/strong> (1882-1918) of Martham<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

George is listed on the War Memorial<\/em> <\/a>as one of those who gave his life during the First World War.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

George was born on 14th<\/sup> March 1882 in Martham. He was the third child of George Hayton & Emma, nee Dove, and had six siblings. His father was Sexton and Parish Clerk at St Mary\u2019s<\/a><\/em> for many years in the late 1800\u2019s and early 1900\u2019s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

George attended the village school<\/a><\/em> from October 1889 to June 1895 and left aged 13 to work on the land.  He was listed in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census returns as living with his parents at Black Street.<\/a><\/em> When he was 19, he was a carpenter’s labourer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He joined the Army and was Private 6930 with the Norfolk Regiment. He was killed on 15th<\/sup> July 1918 at France & Flanders when he was 36 and was buried at La Clythe Military Cemetery, Heuvelland, West-Vlaandeven, Belgium. (Plot V, row E, grave 1). He is also commemorated with a gravestone erected by his parents in section A, plot G2 of St Mary\u2019s graveyard<\/a><\/em> as well as being listed on the village War Memorial.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
