The dates on his gravestone are very stylised and not easy to read but this and evidence from other sources supports his death as being on 17th May 1855 aged 52. According to the inscription he was married to Charlotte and this was Charlotte Holmes. They were married at St Mary’s on 18th December 1826. The marriage register entry shows that he was a widower and Charlotte a single woman but I cannot find a record of his previous marriage. Samuel & Charlotte lived in White Street in 1841 and Black Street in 1851 where he was a watchmaker. In 1841 they were recorded under the surname of Dowe and in 1851 they were recorded as Dove.

His grave is close to that of John Dow and his two wives who were also known as Dove. Perhaps Samuel and John were related in some way (brothers?) but if they were I cannot find a record to prove it.
