Humphrey came from a large family and had at least 13 siblings. In 1871, when he was seven and at school, he lived with his parents at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4139\">Damgate<\/a><\/em>. By the time he was 17 he still lived with his parents at <em><a href=\"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=4139\">Damgate<\/a><\/em> but had become &nbsp;an agricultural labourer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 27%\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"886\" height=\"626\" src=\"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Burnham-Staithe-Road-Martham.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11893 size-full\" srcset=\"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Burnham-Staithe-Road-Martham.jpg 886w, http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Burnham-Staithe-Road-Martham-300x212.jpg 300w, http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/Burnham-Staithe-Road-Martham-768x543.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In 1886, when he was 21, John married local girl Jane Ward and by 1911 they had three children and were living at Burnham Cottage, Staithe Road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Burnham is the cottage on the left.<br>Bay Tree Cottage is on the right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">In all, Humphrey &amp; Jane had five children the first four of whom were born in Martham as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Alice Kate Gymer was born in 1886.<\/li><li>John Gymer was born in 1887.<\/li><li>Charles Gymer was born in 1889.<\/li><li>Elijah George Gymer was born on 4<sup>th<\/sup> July 1893.<\/li><li>Blanche Gymer was born in 1896 in Rollesby and died in 1899.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Humphrey\u2019s first wife, Jane, was born on 23<sup>rd<\/sup> October 1865 in Martham. Her parents were James Ward &amp; Sarah Hodds. Jane died on 7<sup>th<\/sup> December 1934 and is buried at<em><a href=\"http:\/\/marthamnorfolk.co.uk\/?page_id=1204\">&nbsp;St Mary the Virgin<\/a><\/em> graveyard, section H, plot K19<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Humphrey\u2019s second marriage was to Francis Ruth Rowed in Surrey in 1936. In 1939 they were living at &#8216;Oratava&#8217;, Woking, Surrey by which time he was a retired market gardener.
