George drowned in the village pond opposite the King’s Arms<\/a><\/em> only six month after another man – Ernest Twite<\/a><\/em> – also drowned there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below is a copy of part of the front page of the Yarmouth Mercury that reported his death on Saturday 2nd<\/sup> January 1943. It says:-<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Martham Man\u2019s death In Black-out<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A verdict of \u201cAccidental Death\u201d was recorded by the Norwich District Coroner (Mr G W Barnard)  at an inquest at Martham on Monday on George Richard Turner (76) of 4 Gaze\u2019s Terrace, Martham, whose body was recovered from the pit at the village green on Sunday (3rd<\/sup>) .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Coroner found that Mr Turner, who was a widower and lived alone, fell into the water after losing his way in the darkness on Saturday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was evidence that he was a man of sober habits who went out on Saturday nights only to have one pint of beer. He had never used an electric touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remarkable thing is that both Mr Twite<\/a><\/em> and Mr Turner lived at Gaze\u2019s Terrace and both drowned in the same pond within six months of each other. <\/p>\n\n\n
